The race often feels like it is made up of relentless never ending ascents, with riders often racing above the 3000m mark of altitude.

Spanning 250 to 350km across three days, it offers unprecedented vistas of the majestic Maloti Mountains, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Is there a qualifying event that I need to do before entering the Roof of Africa?

There are no longer any qualifying criteria to be fulfilled in order to become a participant in the Roof of Africa from 16 years old; however, as per new rules and regulation 14 and 15 year olds need to qualify, the event organisers reserve the right to determine which class a competitor is eligible for and they are allowed to adjust accordingly.

In this regard, the event organisers reserve the right to request that suitable evidence be provided to be able to satisfy themselves that a rider possesses the necessary experience/skill for the class selected.

How old do I have to be to compete in the Roof of Africa?

Riders who wish to compete in the Roof of Africa have to be 14 by the time the event is scheduled to take place. But as per rules and regulations there are specific criteria to be followed before entry is allowed at this age.

From 16 and older no specific criteria for entry.

Are there set rules to adhere to in terms of motorcycle capacity?

Gold Open to riders from the year of their 18th birthday and older:

–      Any capacity motorcycle.

 

Open to riders from their 16th birthday and older:

Two-stroke: capacity of choice

Four-stroke: capacity of choice

 

Open to riders 14 years old and older, at the time of participation:

The maximum permissible capacity is 200cc 2-Stroke

– Merit based and on invitation only

–  Rider must be a Current National High School Class Competitor actively competing in the National Enduro/Hard Enduro Championship.

–  Rider must have completed a Gold Class Impi Hard Enduro.

–  Rider must have completed a Silver or Gold National HESA Hard Enduro.

–  Rider requires 3 letters of recommendation from coaches, mentors, or experienced riders who can vouch for the competitor’s skill level and readiness for the race.

Silver Open to riders from the year of their 18th birthday and older:

Any capacity motorcycle.

 

Open to riders after their 16th birthday and older:

Two-stroke: 125 to 250cc

Four-stroke: 150 to 250cc

 

Open to riders 14 years old and older, at the time of participation:

The maximum permissible capacity is 200cc 2-Stroke

Four-stroke: 150 to 250cc

Do I need a GPS to compete at the Roof of Africa?

Yes. A GPS is compulsory at the event. Click here for more information regarding GPS devices and use.

Can I compete at the Roof of Africa without a service crew?

Unfortunately, no. You will need to have at least one person as your personal service crew for the event. They will be required to transport your fuel, hydration and nutrition products to the designated service point on each of the mountain race days. We are currently working to include service options available through a variety of dealers and manufacturers – check back soon for more information.

Where should I book accommodation for the Roof of Africa?

The Start/Finish is being planned to be in Matsieng area and specifics will be announced closer to the event but is roughly 45 minutes from Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. Therefore, anywhere within the Maseru district, is perfectly situated for the event. For a full list of accommodation options click here.
